Baraka and the Power of Images

Baraka takes us around the world in the hope of revealing certain truths about our past and present and gives us a vision for the future. Please take some time to reflect on your segmentation of the film and answer the following questions:

What themes or ideas do you feel the film explores?
After watching the film, what images stick in your mind? What meaning can you create from the film based on the association of these images?
What does the film teach us about the fate of humanity.

Alls I can say is WOW!!! What a powerful film! No words just visual put to music. POWERFUL

They took a film and made me feel just about everything they were trying to get across which was:
We need to slow down and relax
(I liked the monkey in the beginning of the movie. He was a chillin at the monkey day spa :)lol).

I believe the film explored how hurried we are now days, and how some have and how some don't have.

It also explored the enviromental issues.

Also it showed that each culture was seeking something greater than themselves to worship.

We are all connected, intertwined. We are more alike than we are different.

One thing I am sure of is that we all came to this earth the same way, we all have happy days, and sad days, and we will all leave this earth the same way.

The images that will stay with me are:
1. The man with the beads meditating in the garden.
2. The apartment buildings in Brazil
3. The children laughing and playing (which we need to do more of)
4. The monkey chillin at the day spa

The meaning I can create from the film:
To enjoy each day to its fullest
To slow down, to meet and greet people, and to be truely interested in what they have to say.

As Far as the fate of humanity, there is nothing new under the sun, but if we don't make drastic changes now,______________.

But I believe we can turn things around. :)

- The film explored many themes, all so powerfull, even with no dialogue. Many cultures and historic places all relating in the way we live.

- Images that stick into my mind would be; the brazil projects, ciggerette factory in Indonesia, the little chicks in the factorys, the man praying with those very long dred locks.

- The meaning that I get from this film is that we are all slowly killing ourselves and we are not realizing it. Many people live in harmony and try to harm this earth as little as possible. Others ruin and polute this earth just to make some money.

- The movie teaches us that the fate of humanity lies in the hands of us humans. If we do not do anything about it, we will go down like many other civilizations have.

There were many themes in 'Baraka', all very powerful.

Images that stuck with me:
~The monkey in the hot spring
~Kids playing
~Apartments and the graves in Brazil
~The man in the zen garden
~The man who was screaming.
~The cars and people moving around really fast.

I think that a lot of the movie was telling us that the world of civilization is moving way too fast, where as nature and rural villages aren't going as fast. Like they're really living their lives out there in their villages and us here in civilization are just moving along without really living.

I think that the film is telling us we need to live our lives to the fullest before we destroy ourselves and there's nothing left of us but ruins.

The film had many themes but i think that everyone will interpret them differently. One theme i i picked up on was that as civilsed and as high tech we are nature will always influence the way that people will live. One immage that stuck with me was the sped up immages of people just doing their everyday routine. How we are so busy and cought up in the world, there is no real time for life.

1) In the movie some themes were religion, nature, simularities and differnces. I think the main theme is to show the connection between everything going on in the world and how we all have differnt things going on but we are one.

2)There are two images that stuck into my head the most. The image in the begainging of the monkey in the hot water and later there is a image of a man in a hot tub and it shows a connection between man and monkey. Also when they use the little chicks like they are just a product, not real animals. They Those them down a big hole and dont even care about them.

3) The meaning of this movie and been seen totaly differntly by everyone. I think that it is trying to portray a lot of issues in life such as nature, history, deather and spirit.

4) This movie is trying to say that our civilization might be forgotten just like many before us but that life will go on, even if its not how things are today.

Baraka has as many powerful meanings as it has pictures, and to hold them all together, Fricke continually points out that all good must contain evil. Similarily though all evil contains good. This was expressed through the solar eclipse, which appeared throughout the movie. Culture was a huge part of this movie as well. From the extravagent whirling dervishes to the isolated monks to the busy city life led by too many people today. This film of no language encompasssed a world of ineffable populations.

This movie is filled with powerful images. In my opinion, this movie's main message is how the 'circle of life' is changing as this world civilizes through technology, industrial revolution and again...polluting it. The peacefull life that was spent long back in early centuries and peaceful death that could be accomplished in those days has changed into a fast forwarding life with all the desires in our minds and goals set where the death comes through different passages like: car accidents, MURDERS, and suicides. This way of life is not meant to be lived, the circle of life has changed drastically as one desires to conquer over land, money, and rule the world through wars but may not have realized the true meaning of life and to gain happiness is to love, family, friends and help those in need... NOT to run around for our greed for money. That's why more and more people are prone to depression nowdays as their surrounding atomosphere is changing or is fast forwarding.
